Knowing a few basics facts about blood pressure can help you deal with any serious effects of high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is measured by a combination of two factors; how much blood is pumped, along with a measure of the resistance in the arterioles. If you have determined that you have high blood pressure, you’ve taken the first step toward making lifestyle changes to lower your blood pressure. Because of increased public awareness about risk factors and unhealthy eating habits, deaths resulting from coronary heart disease have been reduced significantly over recent years.

There are five immediate goals to pursue when trying to lower blood pressure.

1. Lose weight. Try to start by losing at least 10 pounds.
2. Reduce salt consumption to less than one-tenth of an ounce per day.
3. Consume no more than two alcoholic drinks per day.
4. Try to exercise 30 minutes, 3 times a week. Walking is one of the best ways to achieve this goal.
5. Stick to a low fat diet approved by the American Heart Association.

Of course, one of the main causes of high blood pressure is being overweight. Just a 10 pound reduction can reduce blood pressure enough to be able to stop taking medication upon approval of your doctor. Don’t crash diet; just eat three healthy, low fat, higher carbohydrate meals plus healthy snacks. Employ good eating habits such as eating slowly, carefully measuring portions, and leaving a little food on you plate at the end of a meal. Try to eat smaller portions at dinner instead of using that time for binge eating.

Regular exercise helps to protect you from diabetes, arthritis, stroke, and osteoporosis, as well as high blood pressure. Those who do not exercise have up to a 50 percent increased risk of high blood pressure, so regular exercise is well worth the time investment. The most perfect workout is a brisk walk for 30 to 45 minutes, three to five times a week.

Make mental notes about foods that you should avoid. Steer clear of saturated fats found in meat, egg yolks, whole mild, butter, whole cheeses, and shortenings. Stay with safe oils such as olive oil and canola oil.

Another nutritional factor is the addition of fiber to your diet. Include whole grains, oatmeal and plenty of fruits and vegetables for a great way to prevent high blood pressure. Apples and prunes will add pectin, which can help with lowering cholesterol.

Learn to enjoy the true taste of foods by seriously reducing salt in your diet. This is one of the most basic ways to lower blood pressure and you will learn to enjoy the natural flavors of vegetables and other foods.

All of these changes won’t happen overnight, but slowly start eating healthier, adding exercise and monitoring your blood pressure. Together with your doctor, you can lower blood pressure, live healthier, and reduce your risk of heart diseases.

BANANAS

A professor at CCNY for a physiological psych class told his class about
Bananas. He said the expression ‘going bananas’ is from the effects of
Bananas on the brain. Read on:

Never, put your banana in the refrigerator!!!
This is interesting.
After reading this, you’ll never look at a banana in the same way
Again.

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose
Combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial
Boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide
Enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the
Number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes.

But energy isn’t
The only way a banana can help us keep fit.It can
Also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and
Conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression:
According to a recent
Survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt
Much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan,
A type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you
Relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS:Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it
Contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia:High
In iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and
So helps in cases of anemia.

Blood
Pressure:This unique
Tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it
Perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug
Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims
For the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain
Power:200 students at a
Twickenham (Middlesex) school were helped through their exams this year by
Eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain
Power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning
By making pupils more alert.

Constipation:
High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel
Action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers:
One of the quickest
Ways of curing a hangover is to
Make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach
And, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while
The milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.

Heartburn:Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if
You suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning
Sickness:Snacking on
Bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning
Sickness.

Mosquito bites:Before reaching for the insect bite cream,
Try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people
Find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves:
Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight
And at work? Studies at the
Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on
Comfort food like chocolate and crisps. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients,
Researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs.
The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to
Control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every
Two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers:The
Banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its
Soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten
Without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity
And reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control:Many other cultures see bananas as a
‘cooling’ fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of
Expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to
Ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal
Affective Disorder (SAD):Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood
Enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking &Tobacco
Use:Bananas can also help
People trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the
Potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects
of nicotine withdrawal. < BR>

Stress:Potassium
is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the
brain and regulates your body’s water balance. When we are stressed, our
metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be
rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes:According to research in The New England Journal of
Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death
by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts:Those
keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a
piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out.
Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, a banana
really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it
has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the
phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins
and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods
around. So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, ‘A
banana a day keeps the doctor away!’

PASS IT ON TO YOUR FRIENDS
PS: Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time! I
will add one here; want a quick shine on our shoes?? Take the INSIDE of the
banana skin, and rub directly on the shoe…polish with dry cloth. Amazing
fruit!

Omggg Ahhhh that is seriously so cool!
im going to show my whole family haha.
:) Thaaaankss.

When I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, the doctor could not tell me why I developed it. I am in great shape, exercise every other day, I don’t smoke or drink. I have a very good diet and have never been big on salt, yet I developed it anyway. I am on medication which is not currently working, I don’t know what the problem is.

How long have you been on blood pressure medication? Sometimes it takes a while for physicians to adjust your dose to see the result they are looking for. Sometimes people may respond to one med and not another. It may take trial and error to determine the right med for you.

You did not mention your age. Sometimes higher blood pressures can result the older you get, although not necessarily so.

Do you consume stimulants, like caffeine or methamphetamines or diets substances that contain stiumlants? Those substances can spike blood pressure. Some people are more sensitive to stimulants than others, so your friends may be able to use them and not have problems but you may be more sensitive.

Maybe your condition is more genetic–do your parents have high blood pressure? Are you pregnant?

Make sure your doctor tests your kidney function. Kidneys help regulate blood pressure.

Sometimes people have conditions, which can cause them to secrete substances like epinephrine–sometimes called adrenaline, in excessive amounts. Excessive amounts of epinephrine can cause a big spike in your blood pressure. I suggest requesting a urine test the can help measure the amount of ‘metanephrines’ in your system.

Metanephrines are the metabolized by products of catecholamines. Norepinephrine and epinephrine are types of catecholamines. If you have a high level of metanephrines, you may have an increased amount of catcholamines in your system.

Epinephrine helps with your ‘flight or fight’ response–so they are normal to have in your body. For example, they help your heart pump faster, open the passages of your lungs so that you can be prepared to ‘run’ or handle stress.
In excessive levels, they can affect your health.

The result should help your doctor to determine if more tests are needed to diagnose this condition. This condition is treatable, by the way. It is important to rule it out as a cause of your hypertension.

High blood pressure is a condition that you should take seriously. Continue your healthy life style–exercise, good diet, dealing with stress. Good luck!

I am on high blood pressure medication and I am wondering can I still become an airline pilot if my blood pressure is under control?

Depends how bad it is, get a test done before you spend ridiculous amounts of money on lessons

Being overweight, drinking a lot of alcohol and not eating right contribute to high blood pressure. The person may not notice anything wrong now but in a few years, this will come in the form of a stroke that could either kill or leave anyone paralyzed.

Studies reveal that this affects more than 50 million Americans with about 30% still unaware what could happen in the future.

There are no symptoms to tell that a person has high blood pressure. Going to the doctor regularly can prevent this but those who don’t will experience things such as headaches, dizziness and nose bleeds which could already mean something is wrong.

Pain in other parts of the body is another warning of imminent danger. Other red flags are excessive sweating, frequent urination, muscle cramps or even palpitations. Should any of these happen to the person, it will be a good idea to visit a physician to find out what is the problem.

Doctors can check on the blood pressure by wrapping a machine on the upper arm, inflating the cuff and listening to the flow of blood using a stethoscope. Normal blood pressure is around 120 over 80. Should this be 140 over 90 or higher, the person has hypertension.

It isn’t hard to tell one has high blood pressure given the size of the patient. This is because doctors have a standard given an individual’s gender, height and age so those who are above that are at risk of high blood pressure.

The doctor has to go through the standard operating procedure of asking some personal questions, which includes the individual’s medical history. If this runs in the family and a blood test has confirmed the suspicions of the physician, a solution can be planned before it is too late.

The only way to lower the high blood pressure will be for the person to make some lifestyle changes. This usually includes eating healthy, and exercising with the objective of losing those excess pounds so the good cholesterol in the body is balanced against the bad cholesterol.

The person will also have to quit smoking and giving up the daily consumption of alcohol.

Headaches lead to dizziness up to the point that some people feel nauseated or want to just faint. This can be fatigue or high blood pressure that is a warning of something bad that could happen if proper action is not taken so change must happen to make the blood pressure normal.

High blood pressure, which is also called hypertension, affects about one in three adults. Although there are many causes of hypertension, there are not necessarily any symptoms, with 30% of people having high blood pressure not knowing it. Therefore, just because you don’t have symptoms doesn’t mean you don’t have high blood pressure, which is why it is called “the silent killer.” High blood pressure is very dangerous, being the number one cause of stroke, as well as the cause for heart attack and heart failure. Changing blood pressure numbers depends a great deal on the choices we make every day, such has how much we exercise, the foods we ear, and our overall lifestyle. However, for those times when extra help is needed, there is a new scientifically-studied supplement that will help us lower our blood pressure and give us better overall health.

Blood pressure is divided into two parts, systolic and diastolic. Systolic is the pressure of the heart beating; while diastolic is the pressure of the heart vessels when they are filling. Although a persons’ blood pressure can vary naturally throughout the day, if numbers are consistently high after many visits to the doctor, it is possible that you have pre-hypertension or high blood pressure. Healthy blood pressure numbers are about 115/75 mm/Hg. Arteries that are kept young through healthy diet and exercise are usually more elastic and unclogged compared to those that have plaque buildup from diets high in saturated fat and sedentary lifestyles. These unclogged arteries are able to transport blood through them easily and without much effort. However, clogged arteries result in faster blood flow, all of the time, which can cause damages to heart tissue, arteries, kidney, and other major organs in the long run.

High blood pressure can be caused by a variety of lifestyle factors being: body type, sedentary lifestyle. Sodium intake, low potassium intake, heavy alcohol intake, unhealthy eating, and smoking. Although weight isn’t always a reliable indicator of whether or not you’ll have high blood pressure, the type of weight is. Lean body mass (muscle) doesn’t increase blood pressure levels, but fat does, especially when it is around your mid-section. Many of our jobs require us to sit all day at work and then we continue to sit more when we get home. With time, this leads to weight gain, which makes your heart work harder to pump blood through the body. Inactivity usually leads to higher heart rates. Even though salt intake itself isn’t necessarily bad, it leads to more water retention, which increases blood pressure. A moderate intake of salt, especially sea salt or Celtic salt, for healthy individuals is fine. Most Americans do not get enough potassium. It helps to regulate the amount of sodium in our cells and expels the rest to our kidneys. Low levels of potassium can lead to a build up of sodium in the body. Because having three or more alcoholic drinks a day doubles and individuals’ chance of developing high blood pressure, it is important to limit the amount of alcohol intake. Drinking a large amount will eventually put a lot of stress on the heart, liver, pancreas, and brain. Eating a lot of processed and fatty foods can lead to high blood pressure as well. By adapting a diet rich in fruits and vegetables as well as whole grain products, fish, nuts, magnesium, and potassium, blood pressure can be brought back down. Smoking damages the heart and arteries, while the nicotine constricts blood vessels, increases heart rate, and raises blood pressure. The carbon monoxide in smoke replaces oxygen in the blood, which makes the heart work even harder to make up for the difference. It is important if you have high blood pressure that you do not smoke.

Along with the above diet and lifestyle changes, there are other natural ways to lower blood pressure. These supplements include: fish oil, CoQ10, and garlic. Although these are very effective, they usually lower systolic pressure much more than diastolic pressure. There is a blend of natural ingredients that lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure separately and work even better combined, dandelion leaf extract, lycopene, stevia extract, olive leaf extract, and hawthorn extract. Dandelion leaf extract provides a healthy supply of vitamins, including vitamins A, B, C, D, iron, silicon, magnesium, zinc, potassium, and manganese. This extract produces a diuretic effect in the body relieving hypertension in the body by drawing excess water and sodium from the body and releasing it through the kidneys as urine, which allows the blood vessels to relax and in turn lowers blood pressure. Lycopene, which is mostly found in tomatoes and processed tomato products, has great antioxidant abilities as well as free-radical scavenging properties. It also lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol, lowers homocysteine levels, and reduces blood platelet stickiness which leads to clogged arteries. Higher intakes of lycopene mean less thickening of arteries and a reduced risk of heart attack. Stevia extract, which is often used as a sweetener, relaxes arteries and helps to prevent the buildup of calcium on artery walls, which keeps them healthy and reduces blood pressure. Many scientific studies have proven that stevia controls blood sugar levels as well as has great potential in treating type 2 diabetes along with hypertension. Olive leaf extract relaxes blood vessels and prevents buildup of plaque in the arteries, which in turn lowers blood pressure. It also acts as an antioxidant. Hawthorn extract has been used to support heart health for many centuries. It improves blood pressure levels by increasing blood vessel elasticity, as well as improves coronary artery blood flow and contractions of the heart muscle. This supplement also has antioxidant properties, as well as the anti-anxiety abilities and blood sugar regulation properties.

After taking a combination of these herbs, you should notice both systolic and diastolic numbers lowering within two weeks. When you are taking herbs that support your blood pressure, it is important to keep it monitored so that you have an adequate reading of your numbers. To do so, you can purchase a home blood pressure monitoring device for thirty to two-hundred dollars. However, buying one in the thirty to fifty dollar range is sufficient and will be money well-spent. Although there are no side effects noted in the study, you may notice an increase in the number of trips you take to the bathroom do to the diuretic effect of the dandelion leaf extract. The vitamins mentioned above can be found at your friendly internet health food store.

What Is High Blood Pressure? High Blood Pressure
(Hypertension)
High blood pressure (HBP) is a serious condition that can lead to coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, and other health problems.
“Blood pressure” is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood. If this pressure rises and stays high over time, it can damage the body in many ways.
Overview
About 1 in 3 adults in the United States has HBP. HBP itself usually has no symptoms. You can have it for years without knowing it. During this time, though, it can damage the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of your body.
This is why knowing your blood pressure numbers is important, even when you’re feeling fine. If your blood pressure is normal, you can work with your health care team to keep it that way. If your blood pressure is too high, you need treatment to prevent damage to your body’s organs.
Blood Pressure Numbers
Blood pressure numbers include systolic (sis-TOL-ik) and diastolic (di-a-STOL-ik) pressures. Systolic blood pressure is the pressure when the heart beats while pumping blood. Diastolic blood pressure is the pressure when the heart is at rest between beats.
You will most often see blood pressure numbers written with the systolic number above or before the diastolic, such as 120/80 mmHg. (The mmHg is millimeters of mercury—the units used to measure blood pressure.)
The table below shows normal numbers for adults. It also shows which numbers put you at greater risk for health problems. Blood pressure tends to goes up and down, even in people who have normal blood pressure. If your numbers stay above normal most of the time, you’re at risk.
High blood pressure (HBP) or hypertension means high pressure (tension) in the arteries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the pumping heart to all the tissues and organs of the body. High blood pressure does not mean excessive emotional tension, although emotional tension and stress can temporarily increase blood pressure. Normal blood pressure is below 120/80; blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called “pre-hypertension”, and a blood pressure of 140/90 or above is considered high.
The top number, the systolic blood pressure, corresponds to the pressure in the arteries as the heart contracts and pumps blood forward into the arteries. The bottom number, the diastolic pressure, represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes after the contraction. The diastolic pressure reflects the lowest pressure to which the arteries are exposed.
An elevation of the systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure increases the risk of developing heart (cardiac) disease, kidney (renal) disease, hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis or arteriosclerosis), eye damage, and stroke (brain damage). These complications of hypertension are often referred to as end-organ damage because damage to these organs is the end result of chronic (long duration) high blood pressure. For that reason, the diagnosis of high blood pressure is important so efforts can be made to normalize blood pressure and prevent complications.
It was previously thought that rises in diastolic blood pressure were a more important risk factor than systolic elevations, but it is now known that in people 50 years or older systolic hypertension represents a greater risk.
The American Heart ociation estimates high blood pressure affects approximately one in three adults in the United States - 73 million people. High blood pressure is also estimated to affect about two million American teens and children, and the Journal of the American Medical ociation reports that many are under-diagnosed. Hypertension is clearly a major public health problem.

The goal of Ayurvedic medicine is to prevent diseases before they occur. Studies have suggested that Ayurveda may be particularly effective at reducing the risk of heart disease. For example, a recent study found that this traditional Indian medicine helped reduce plaque and reverse the thickening of artery walls known as atherosclerosis in both healthy adults as well as adults at high risk for heart disease. (Atherosclerosis is a slow, complex disease in which fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium, and other substances build up in the inner lining of an artery. This build-up, also known as plaque, can lead to heart attack and stroke.)
Combining yoga with an Ayurvedic herbal remedy containing Winter cherry (Withania somnifera), Boswellia (Boswellia serrata), and Turmeric (Curcuma longa) can reduce pain and disability if you have arthritis.
What should I expect from an Ayurvedic treatment?
Ayurvedic treatment focuses on rebalancing the doshas. On your first visit, the practitioner will take a detailed medical history, check your pulse, palpate your abdomen, examine your tongue, eyes, nails, and skin, and listen to the tone of your voice. He or she will also ask you questions about your general state of health with special focus on your lifestyle, diet, habits, and environmental surroundings. Based on this essment, he or she will then make recommendations on how to restore your natural dosha balance, which almost always includes changes in lifestyle, particular diet. Practitioners draw from more than 20 types of treatment, but the most commonly prescribed include:
• Pranayama — breathing exercises. Practicing pranayama generates feelings of calmness.
• Abhyanga — rubbing the skin with herbalized oil (usually sesame oil is the base) to increase blood circulation and draw toxins out of the body through the skin.
• Rasayana — using mantras (repeated words or phrases) during meditation combined with specific herbs to rejuvenate a person.
• Yoga — combining pranayama, movement, and meditation. Has been shown to improve circulation and digestion, and to reduce blood pressure, cholesterol levels, anxiety, and chronic pain.
• Pancha karma — cleansing the body of toxins to purify the body and reduce cholesterol. Practitioners use methods to induce sweat, bowel movements, and even vomit in an effort to cleanse the body of toxins.
• Herbal medicines — prescribing herbs to restore dosha balance.
Physiotherapy accompanied by herbal medication can alleviate the symptoms of a paralytic stroke. The vitalizing body massages prevent the inactive muscles from atrophying and medication helps to improve the circulatory system. Regular Panchakarma prevents stroke by maintaining normal blood pressure and keeping the arteries healthy. The endothelium of the arteries gets damaged due to accumulation of toxins and subsequent formation of thrombus. These thrombi, when dislodged, can cause stroke. Regular Panchakarma and Ayurveda lifestyle prevents this catastrophe.

A number of Ayurvedic herbal remedes have been evaluated for their beneficial effects. For example, Guggulipid (Commiphora mukul), a traditional Ayurvedic medication used to treat high cholesterol, is widely used in India. It appears to effectively lower cholesterol by blocking the production of cholesterol in the liver. Similarly, fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum) seeds can decrease LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and increase HDL cholesterol levels. These effects seem to be due to reduced intestinal absorption of cholesterol, and may be related to the high fiber content of the seed. Fenugreek seeds may also help control your blood sugars if you have diabetes, again because of the high fiber content.

Other Ayurvedic herbs are being studied as treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety, asthma, dementia, dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), herpes, high blood pressure, Parkinson’s disease, perimenopausal problems, and premenstrual syndrome, amongst many other conditions. Ayurvedic herbs combined with conventional medications may also be helpful for acne, chronic constipation, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, obesity, and uterine fibroids.

Be sure to consult your doctor before trying Ayurveda, especially if you take medicines or have certain dietary restrictions such as with diabetes.
