My sister’s boyfriend was feeling sick the other night and he went to the emergency room and he said that when the nurse took his blood pressure it read 280/220. Is this humanly possible to have a bottom blood pressure that high and live to tell about it? He was admitted and treated but released the next day. I think he must’ve been mistaken about his bottom BP reading. Wouldn’t a bottom pressure that high all but kill you?

yes, it is possible. i hope they re-checked it again with another cuff. i dont think they would have sent him home with it being that high. sometimes we have an elevated blood pressure in response to pain, or simply from seeing someone in a whit coat coming at us! i will say that most people dont live to tell about it. a good question to ask is why did they admit him?for his blood pressure? if so, it must have been right.

I know if you are pregnant (female) the worry about preclampsia when the bottom number is 90….

There must have been something wrong with the machine.

The questioning of this surrounds whether a manual blood pressure reading was taken or an automated one as it is noted that for accurate blood pressure monitoring for pregnant patients it is imperative that the practitioner use a manual sphygmomanometer so as to take the blood pressure reading accurately. I must say that the reading is innacurate as the Diastolic blood pressure would mean very high Blood pressure which would lead to immedaite stroke and death.
