I just took our blood pressure on one of the little automatic home monitors, honestly, I have been trying to find it because I was a bit worried about him.

He’s 58, over 6ft, not overweight, he’s usually a bit breathless on exertion (smoker), but he’s started having some headaches lately, and saying it’s too hot when I don’t think it’s hot in the house, so I was wondering about his heart and his blood pressure and I hunted down the monitor.

It measured me at 110/62 (I’m 40 and female) but it measured him at 116/107 - that diastolic is way too high isn’t it? I know he’s older and older people do have higher diastolic pressure, but I didn’t think he was really old enough for it to be that high.

At 58 (drinker/smoker) it this real bad at his age or just a bit high and something we could cure with lifestyle changes?

Thank you.

A difference of 9 mm Hg from the systolic (116) to the diastolic (107) blood pressure suggests an erroneous reading. There is only one medical study that I know of which compared various over-the-counter blood pressure units against a mercury weighted blood pressure unit. The 2 which displayed the most consistent accuracy and reproducibility were the Omron and the ReliOn. Consumer Reports rated the ReliOn as a ‘Best Buy’ as it is less expensive. Bear in mind that we have no data on wrist units only on blood pressure units that are applied to the upper arm. If I may be of further assistance please let me know. I wish you both the very best of health and in all things may God bless.

An isolated reading has no relevance until you notice a trending of these numbers into a higher range. You can write these down but, in order to get an accurate blood pressure, it should be taken first thing in the morning before he gets up and walks around. He should sit quietly on the side of the bed and always take the blood pressure on the same arm. This will give you an accurate picture of his basal blood pressure reading. Write this down - do it every few days to see if there is a problem and if there is, he needs to see his family physician. At 58, he can still reverse some of the effects of smoking (the breathlessness), otherwise, if he is getting short of breath now, he may soon be diagnosed with emphysema and be tethered to an oxygen tubing/tank. Lifestyle changes can improve everyone’s overall health by healthy diet, daily exercise for at least 20-30 minutes per day (walking is easiest), no smoking, maintaining a normal body weight, keeping your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers in normal ranges.

John has a point, it could be an erroneous reading. Check it a second time. If the diastolic is still that high, take him in to be seen / evaluated by some trained professionals.

I just asked my Mom this since she’s a nurse. She said the bottom number is definitely way too high. However, she also said the home BP units sometimes do not read correctly so take it over again to see if it’s still that high. If it is that high again I recommend him going to see his physician soon. Good Luck.

Ideal blood pressure should be below 120/80 milligrams per deciliter, but also reading as 130/85 is considered normal.
If your systolic pressure is 130-139 and the diastolic pressure is 85-89 you are heading into risky territory.
A reading of 140/90 or higher means that it is time to take serious action!!!

The top number or the systolic blood pressure corresponds to the pressure in the arteries as the heart contracts and pumps blood forward into the arteries.
The bottom number or the diastolic pressure represents the pressure in the arteries as the heart relaxes after the contraction.
The diastolic pressure reflects the lowest pressure to which the arteries are exposed.
So in layman’s terms, systolic blood pressure is the number that corresponds to the pump motion of the heart and the diastolic pressure is the relaxation of the heart.
If either one of these increase, then there is increased risk in the development of heart disease, renal disease, hardening of arteries, eye damage, stroke.

To say it simply, blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps the blood.
    Is that serious?
YES IT IS. If you have high blood pressure or hypertension you are at risk of many diseases that may result in complications.

Can High Blood Pressure be cured?
Hypertension is not a curable disease. However it can be controlled if you live a healthy lifestyle and eat right.

Hypertension occurs with no symptoms most of the time, but in some cases, symptoms occurs like chest pain, confusion, ear noise or buzzing, irregular heartbeat, nosebleed, tiredness, vision changes, severe headache, shortness of breath, and significant sweating.
